Private-label supplements are one of the most accessible product categories for new brands — no factory to build, no formulation lab required. But the number of decisions can feel overwhelming. This guide walks through the essentials in order.
1. Choose your dosage form
The format shapes your cost, your brand story and your customer:
- Capsules — the default for vitamins and botanicals; easy to produce, dose precisely and brand with printed shells.
- Tablets — lowest cost per dose at volume; good for daily-use vitamins.
- Softgels — the premium choice for oils (fish oil, vitamin E, CoQ10) with better bioavailability.
- Gummies — the fastest-growing format; younger audience, higher margins, strong differentiation.
- Powders & solid beverages — high doses per serving, ideal for collagen, protein and wellness shots.
- Oral liquids — premium, fast-absorbing ampoules for beauty and energy lines.
If you are unsure, start with the format your target customer already buys, then expand.
2. Define your market and claim
Your destination market determines labeling language, compliance requirements and dosage considerations. Your claim (energy, beauty, immunity, sports performance…) determines the formula. Be honest about what you can substantiate — most markets restrict disease-treatment claims.
3. Find an OEM/ODM partner
Look for a partner who can do more than fill capsules:
- Formulation support or fill-to-spec
- GMP-compliant production with batch-level QC
- Label and packaging design assistance
- Export documentation and compliance guidance
- Low MOQ for a first trial batch

4. Samples first, always
Never skip the sample stage. Evaluate formula, taste, dosage form quality, packaging and label print before committing to bulk. A good partner provides free working samples — typically within 7–10 days.
5. Understand MOQ and cost structure
Minimum order quantities exist because setting up a production run has fixed costs. A fair starting MOQ is often around 500–1,000 units per SKU, which lets new brands run a trial batch. Ask for a clear price breakdown: formula, production, packaging, labels, test reports and shipping. See our MOQ explainer for details.
6. Plan compliance early
Supplement rules differ by market. For the US, that means cGMP production and FDA labeling compliance. For the EU, it is the food supplements framework. Confirm the requirements before locking your label — retrofitting compliance is expensive. Our certification guide covers the basics.
7. Launch, learn, scale
Start with one or two SKUs, validate demand, then expand your line with the same partner. The best OEM relationships grow with your brand — reorders get faster, and product development gets easier as you build history.
