Nicotinamide mononucleotide — NMN — is one of the premium ingredients buyers ask about most, and one of the trickiest to launch responsibly. The raw material is expensive, it degrades quickly if moisture and heat are not controlled, and its regulatory status is not the same in every market. This guide sets out the decisions a buyer should make before briefing a manufacturer.

Start with the market status, not the formula

Before anything else, confirm where the product will be sold. NMN is treated very differently from market to market: some jurisdictions allow it to be sold as a supplement, others restrict it to food use or require it to be notified, and some prohibit retail sale entirely. The position also changes over time as regulators review it.

This matters because the answer determines almost everything downstream — whether you can print a Supplement Facts or a Nutrition Declaration panel, what claims wording is permitted, and whether the product can be sold to consumers at all. Agree the destination market with your manufacturer and take regulatory advice on it before you commission artwork. A formula that is perfectly legal in one market can be unsellable in the next.

Raw material quality decides the product

NMN is where a private-label range is won or lost. Two suppliers can both quote "NMN" and deliver very different material, so the purchase specification and the testing must be explicit:

  • Assay and purity — confirm the declared content by a recognised analytical method, and set a minimum purity in the specification rather than accepting whatever arrives.
  • Identity — verify the material is NMN, not a related nicotinamide compound.
  • Heavy metals — lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury.
  • Residual solvents — relevant to how the material was synthesised.
  • Microbiology — total plate count, yeast and mould, and where relevant the pathogen panel.
  • Moisture content — this one is easy to overlook and directly affects shelf life.

Ask for a Certificate of Analysis for every incoming lot and keep the retention samples. In a category priced on purity, undocumented material is the fastest way to lose a repeat order.

Moisture and stability control

NMN is hygroscopic, which shapes the whole production plan:

  1. Blending and filling should run in a humidity-controlled area. Material left open in a humid room picks up moisture, cakes and loses assay.
  2. Packaging needs a real moisture barrier — an induction seal or a tight liner plus desiccant. A standard screw cap on a plastic bottle is often not enough on its own.
  3. Light protection matters if the material is exposed in the finished pack; opaque or amber containers remove the question.
  4. Shelf life should be supported by data — real-time and accelerated stability on the finished pack, not an assumption carried over from a similar product.

Choosing the format

  • Capsules — the most common format. Because the dose is comparatively small, NMN fits comfortably in a size 1 or 0 capsule, which keeps the bottle compact.
  • Powder — sold as a scoop or stick-pack format; convenient for higher single servings, but the moisture problem is at its worst here, so barrier packaging is essential.
  • Tablets — possible but the harder option: compression heat and moisture both work against a sensitive raw material.
  • Sublingual and drops — a niche format. Confirm the destination market accepts it as a supplement before developing it.

Combination products

Most NMN SKUs are sold alone, but combinations are common where the market allows them — resveratrol and pterostilbene are the classic pairings, and trimethylglycine (TMG) is frequently requested alongside. Two practical notes: every additional active raises the fill weight and therefore the capsule size, and every additional active must be separately justified in the destination market. Do not assume that because one ingredient is accepted, a blend of three will be.

Labelling

Agree the panel wording, the ingredient naming convention and the permitted claim set for your specific market before the carton is printed. Because NMN sits in an unsettled part of many regulatory frameworks, this is the one category where a reprint is genuinely likely if you leave the panel to the last minute.

MOQ, sampling and lead times

NMN raw material is costly, so trialling small is sensible. A practical starting point with a manufacturer that supports small batches is MOQ 500 units per SKU, samples in 3–5 days, production shipped within 7 days, and a COA with every batch and every incoming lot. That lets a new brand verify purity, packaging and stability before committing to a full range.
